Week 4 Preview – Cherokee at Creekview – Battle of Canton
This week’s VNN-GA Game of the Week preview looks at the Cherokee Warriors traveling to take on the Creekview Grizzlies at Creekview HS tonight, 9/25 at 7:30pm.
The Warriors are 3-0 coming off an impressive 21-15 victory over the then 3rd ranked Rome Wolves. Cherokee Head Coach Josh Shaw is in his 9th year at CHS and looking to continue their impressive start. Any success this week will most likely involve key players QB A.J. Swann, WR Adarrius Harshaw, WR Brady Borcherer, WR Hayden Shockley, RB Keith Adams Jr, LB Braesen Parker, LB Tyler Goddard & LB Will Ross.
The Grizzlies are led by Head Coach Trevor Williams who is entering his 2nd year as the Creekview head man. Creekview is also undefeated with a 2-0 start, most recently prevailing over Woodstock 16-2. Standouts in their early season success are RB Tyler Stevens, QB Brody Rhodes, LB Grant Anderson, DL Sam Minozzi, LB Isaac Hubert, S Cale Williams & CB Nick Stewart.
I recently had a Q&A with both coaches discussing the start to the season & tonight’s game.
What is your biggest area of concern about your team heading into this game?
Coach Shaw – “After playing a tough, physical team like Rome, we are going to line up this week against another extremely physical team in Creekview. My concern is whether or not our players will respond!”
Coach Williams – “I think every week in 2020 you worry about keeping players and coaches healthy and bringing a full roster to the game each week.”
What has been your team’s strengths that have come to light coming off your early season games?
Coach Shaw – “1. How many explosive plays we have had offensively to this point 2. How well our defense is performing having graduated six starters from last season. Have had several new starters play really well.”
Coach Williams – “Offensively we have been able to run the football more consistently than a year ago. Defensively we are tackling fairly well for early season games.
Has anyone or anything stood out as the most surprising or unexpected positive during the first games?
Coach Shaw – “How well our receivers have performed. We have five different receivers who have caught a touchdown so far.”
Coach Williams – “I think our offensive line has stood out.”
Any thoughts on how COVID as impacted the season to date – good or bad or in general?
Coach Shaw – “I think our players and coaches realize how easily high school football this season could’ve been taken away! We are blessed to be playing!”
Coach Williams – “It impacts everything we do. But our kids and our coaches have been phenomenal dealing with the adversity. If anything, it has made us closer as a team.”
Any final thoughts on the game, the season?
Coach Shaw – ” Focus on the 3 T’s… Together, toughness, turnovers.”
Thanks to both coaches for their time & input. Looks to be a tremendous game, wishing both teams well in tonight’s match up!
